Wear Resistant Engineered Ceramics

XeraCarb have developed a number of materials that lend themselves to a number of different industries and applications.

Our materials have a lower density than other engineering ceramics, such as sintered silicon carbide or alumina, while retaining high levels of strength.

The material exhibits strength at both ambient and high temperatures, good reliability (low scatter in strength), excellent wear and oxidation resistance and good thermal shock performance.

XeraBond WR

Wear-Resistant Ceramics

Our new lightweight ceramic composite can be manufactured using slip casting or pressure casting methods, making large and complex shaped components possible.

XeraBond-WR is a sialon bonded silicon carbide product manufactured from high purity raw materials and has exceptional properties to resist a variety of extreme service conditions.

It has a unique formulation, which has been developed for excellent resistance to abrasion, excellent thermal properties and outstanding chemical stability to acids, alkalis and molten metals.

XeraBond-WR has a high density and is homogeneous. The development of the bonding phase during firing with a fine pore structure and low permeability and hardness gives its wear resistance.

This combination of properties, along with the ability to make large and complex shapes, makes the material suitable for use in a wide range of applications including kiln furniture for the rapid firing of porcelain ceramics, wear resistant components, particularly for abrasion, and high strength, thermal shock resistant refractory components e.g. burner tubes, cyclone nozzles etc.

Wear Resistant Applications

XeraBond WR has been proven to show excellent abrasion resistance and can be used in hydrocyclones, dewatering centrifuges and flue-gas des-sulphurisation.

The abrasion resistance of XeraBond-WR is excellent in impinging, scrubbing and slurry conditions. It also performs well when acidic and alkaline slurries are handled. Applications include nozzles, pump components, cyclone and hydrocyclone liners and pipe liners.

Kiln Applications

Sialon-bonded silicon carbide can be used to line kilns as well as providing a strong thermal shock resistant hot face. XeraCarb also manufacture burner tubes for gas-fuelled kilns showing excellent thermal-shock resistance.

Mineral Applications

Saggers can be manufactured in all grades of material, providing a variety of properties for a particular application. Where minimal cross-contamination is desired XeraCarb can provide options for high purity avoiding contamination. A variety of designs are available. The high strength and thermal shock properties of XeraBond has reduced failure rates in this application.

XeraBond-WR is not wetted by aluminium, copper or zinc. Components include launders, extrusion tubes, pump parts and pouring nozzles.

Metal Applications

Silicon carbide materials are suitable for non-ferrous applications and non-ferrous molten metals. Common industries are zinc and aluminium and copper. Products in these industries are thermocouple sheaths, immersion heaters, wire extrusion dies amongst others.

XeraCarb materials are currently being evaluated for use as personal body armour with the research sponsored by the UK’s Ministry of Defence.

This material offers significant advantages over existing armour in terms of the cost, shape and size of components which are possible and in terms of the total system weight.
